Can I ask where the picture was taken? Was that an M5 in front of the M3? If so, it must have been a 2001 prototype because there is no black molding on the bumper. Or was it an aftermarket aero kit. Any insight would be appreciated.

I think the M5 was photographed under exacting conditions, i.e. pure white light and overlit.

You'll see from the M3 photo, time was around dusk and lighting was very rich with setting sun. Personally I love the hint of blue/purple. In the course of following the M3s, I was behind car2 (anthracite) the most. It changed from a charcoal grey, to a deep purplish blue, to eventually near black after the sun set.
