there are two pipes from the headers back, the reason is for flow merging purposes, three into one is the most efficient method of mixing exhausts, by splitting it into quad exhausts (two from three, but split in the muffler) you get slightly lower back pressure, but added weight. so to summarize, it is a TRUE quad exhaust (not fake pipes), but it was done for stylistic reasons
(if you look at the M5, it also only has two pipes from the headers back

Did BMW go with 2 sets of tail-pipes purely for
non-functional, stylistic reasons? It's an inline
6, which means only one set of headers. The pictures
I've seen of the bottom of the car also idicate that
the exhaust piping goes to only one side. That other
set better be functional!! Did they do the same lame
shit on the current M Coupe and MZ.
