I was also curious about this, but since I wanted a car to play with, I ordered the M3. When the possibility of extended delivery times first surfaced, I asked the dealer the same question you posed. He has taught track driving for ten years and without a seconds hesitation he said get the M3.

Your time frame should also work in your favor because all sorts of information will be available (hopefully) before long.

I'm taking delivery of a 330i tomorrow, but it's ever in human nature to be wanting something more so I'm already thinking about my next car (coming 2-3 years down the road). So, should it be an M3 or an M5? I'm attracted by the luxury (damn, that DSP stereo sounds great) and sheer power of the M5, but I want to retain the road feel and as much of the nimbleness of the 3-series as possible and I'm afraid I'll lose all too much of it with the heavy, understeering M5. Should I just go for the M3? Those who've driven both, how would you compare the handling/road feel of the cars?
Price is not an important issue. I just want the best four-seater I can buy.
