The reply is a bit confusing about what the word generation implies - read again....can be read to mean that same SMG could be used in second generation M3 ...

I actually found something on some European Web site somewhere saying that second-generation SMG would have paddles, instead of using the stick for shifting. This is consistent with loki's sighting of a paddle-equipped M3 in the Bay Area recently. See Here for lots of info. Now, if I get this right, here's a picture of the car sighted in Sausalito:
