Checkers was the pet dog of the Nixon family, from the famous "I am not a crook" speech Richard Nixon gave in 1960 (i think) on TV to defend his actions in some scandal. The cute dog in his lap was an early effective use of manipulating emotions in viewers to absolve him of guilt. It is pretty well known as the "Checker Speech".
M3 is a great car, and like I said Porsche has left many people out in the cold with their recent philosphy of an "entry level Porsche being a used Porsche". The Boxster is underpowered and too limited with no back seat, and the 996 is too expensive.
