The M5 has recirculating ball steering, because the r/p system wouldn't fit in the car. The differences that I feel between the steering system in the M5 and M3 is very subtle. The M3 is only a littly more precise, and has more feel of the road.
I think this question has been asked about 10,000 times already :) In any case, yes the R/P system is more precise. The Z8 is the first V8 BMW with one. True, while the 528 is R/P, the 540 and M5 are R/B. But, let's get this straight, they could have done, but decided not to..lazy perhaps? It didn't fit properly, but they could have got it to fit. I won't go into the technical details, but the R/P gives more direct steering input than R/B which is a ball mechanism that gives feedback to the steering based on ball movement. And, typically, the R/P system weighs less than the R/B...this accounts for part of the fat weight on the M5.
