I remember reading an article on it in Europe last fall, and I believe I remember them saying it was actually stiffer than the 2 door, and handled exactly like it. Audi has a wild small wagon(RS4) out over there with 380 hp/324 Ft/Lb Torque.
I visited a dealer in Houston tonight to test drive my wifes' future car - X5. Anyway the salesman I spent the time with came from Germany head office to work in the U.S. in order to move up the corporate ladder at BMWNA. Great guy. Anyway, this is what I learned from this inside source:
The E46 will have a base price of $46,900. The only option will be for a Navigation system and some minor adders but the car comes fully loaded. There are some $0 deducts. Plans for US are: 4 door - YES, 4 door AUTO - YES, Stationwagon M3 - YES, SMG - YES this will be a $4,000 US adder over the base M3 price when it is released. Timing on the 4 door / Auto / SMG / Stationwagon is not exactly known but YES it is coming. Best guess from him was 2002 models. No plans to bring to the U.S. the current BMW MY WAY program where you can custom order your colors right down to the actual stitching on the seats. You will still have to put this through a special order request with a price / delivery adder.
If I hear more sports fans I'll let you know. I am very eager to buy a SMG M3.
By the way, the X5 is great machine - test drive any of its competitors then this car and you will laugh at the others especially Mercedes.
