Australian performance magazine "motor" tested manual and SMG E36 M3.

The times are 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) and are therefore slower.

Manual best 5.6
SMG 6.2

The E36 SMG is a complete DOG.

The only advantage is for heavy city stop/start type traffic, where you dont have to clutch.

The system is notoriously unreliable. A friend of mine had an M3 SMG that had nearly 50% of its time in the workshop for 3 months. In the end BMW swapped the car for a 540 to keep him happy.

A significant improvement would be required on the E46 to make it worthwile.
