No SMG is planned he reasoned because the Steptronic has become very efficient, and the cost to create a new SMG would be quite high for the small demand.

Funny since the new SMG II is *already* created and on test cars ;) The thought of having a steptronic on a M3 is revolting. I test drove a 328i with it and found it completely unresponsive in manual mode and clueless during sport mode on the twisties. The only thing it was good for was straightline acceleration, which is boring to say the least. Give us SMG! Otherwise the 6-speed manual will do just fine thank you.

I just want to second that. I drove a 328ci with Steptronic and hated it. First off, it felt like an automatic (that too-smooth, delayed, "where'd the power go" feeling), and even in "manual" mode, the damn thing kept shifting when I didn't want it to. It was in no way an acceptable substitute for a transmission with a regular clutch, whether SMG or old-fashioned manual.
