a repeating thread has been the m3's weight. if the initial publicity was a "trial balloon," BMW certainly got an ear full about weight. it would make sense to me. why would they want their masterpiece referred to as "a great car EXCEPT that it weighs too much".

I'm curious, how could BMW go about reducing the weight at this point? Wouldn't reduction measures like a revised exhaust, aluminum body panels, thinner windshields, less soundproofing either take too long or be undesirable for the typical M3 buyer?

does bring out all kinds of speculation, some of it pessimistic, wildly optimistic, or in this case probably unrealistic. I did hear that they try to trim some fat just before the specs are finalized, but most likely just a few pounds. Personally, I don't care that much about this issue. I was just trying to think of something besides USA smog equipment which would delay Euro production as well. But above someone posted they just heard about a test run sighting outside of Franfurt! So, who knows whassup?
