I often buy cars by negotiating with different dealers for the best price.

Do I really want the manuf. to be able to set prices and stick to them across dealers?

You're getting the lowest price with-which a particular dealer can make a desirable profit. However you would get an even lower price if the independant dealers were eleminated from the system, as would every other customer.
