BMW is not in the business of making cars to compete with Vettes and Vipers in pure acceleration. They could, but that it not what BMW is about. I have a M5 and it is not the fastest production car on the planet. The M3 will not be either. BMW is about building balanced with speed, handling, comfort, reliability and longevity. They are not about 0-60 or the 1/4 mile. The M5's greatest strength in high speed acceleration. I think BMW makes the best balance of all these things for my needs and wants.

If your most important criteria is raw acceleration. Nothing wrong with that. Then the Z06, Viper or modified Supra are good bets. But if you expect the M3 to outrun a Viper or 996TT or even a Z06, forget it. Now by the same token, I think it will handle as well or better than these cars on the track, but that is a different story. Everything in the enfgineering world is a compromise. The M5 exhibits a lot of understeer, but guess what I have gotten the rear end to come around on both the street and track, so I am grateful for the cars forgiveness.

Personally, I like love my M5 and have no regrets even though I cannot beat a Viper in 1/4 mile or a modded Supra for that matter.

To each their own, but whining about will do no good. Take action and select the appropiate car for your needs.

Flame away.

BTW, most of Bruce's 15 points were quite valid. His reference to drilled rotors was aimed at BMW's lawyers concerns, not legal issues in the US. BMW can and will take a more conservative legal approach as they see fit.

Some members of this forum have expressed dissatisfaction with those others (such as myself) that claim that 343 HP won't quite cut it -- going from 240 HP up to well over 300 I can understand if some of you feel that this is more than adequate and that those that complain are people that are never satisfied, but please remember that we Europeans actually go from 321 HP to 343 HP (if that is what will actually come out -- see recent posts about a possible delay), and since the new car will weigh a little bit more (and the competition has gotten stiffer), the increase in power is not at all as significant as we had come to expect.

Of course, power output is no self-objective in itself, it's the actual performance that counts -- and as an "acceleration nut" who doesn't care how much faster than 250 km/h a car can go (respect for high speeds grow with age, at lest for one who's had his guardian angels working overtime...), I'd really like the new M3 to break the 5 second barrier for 0-100 km/h. When it does, I promise I for one will be satisfied...
