I've been on this board for 9-10 months and the issue of a 6 or 8 cyl. for the m3 continues to be bandied about with valid points for each view.
Personally, I'd like to see bmw keep the m3 a 6cyl, and continue to break new engineering ground in the years ahead. Eventually, the rest of the 3 series line benefits from the m3 product development. Meanwhile, the m5 might be getting monster power in the future, maybe even a v-12 500 hp!
This leaves room for a newly developed "m4" v8 with a chassis designed to mate with an 8 cylinder. this new four passenger car should be lower weight than the m3, as this is what people seem to want. Price it between the m3 and m5, with fewer amenities, but not as stripped as the lightweight. I think there is a developing market, if the market isn't here already. just my 2 cents.
