Actually, Lingerfeter (don't know if that's right??) is going to run the Vettes in the GTclass next year with GM backing them up. They are down on HP against the Vipers, but want to claim the GT Title against the Porsche/M3s. There was an article 1-2 weeks ago in Autoweek about this. GM/Lingerfeter said their made competition will come from the 911 GT3. They are not taking the E46 M3s too seriously, BIG MISTAKE.

Does that mean all the Vettes will have to compete against next year are a couple crappy Porsches?

Actually the only cars I have seen recently in GTS is the Viper, the Vette and the Porsche 993 GT2 car (aka 911 turbo). I wonder if the 996 turbo is going to campaigned in the GTS? I still would love to see the M5 in that class, but the Vette engine had to be reworked a lot for it to be competitive (it was enlarged for 5.7L to at or over 7L), so I don't know what the M5 would have to do to run with the Vette. They need some more makes in the GTS and GT categories IMO.

Side note: they did say MG was going to field a Le Mans prototype car next year and it may run in the ALMS next year.
