Yes, it was meant by Porsche to replace the 911 and was never fully accepted by the airheads. Of course, there is a debate going on now among Porschefiles as to wheher the new 996 more resembles the 911 or the 928.....
No, in that it did have a production run of 17 years and won numerous car of the year awards. They sold a few thousand a year until the last 5 years or so.
Remember, it was a very expensive car in its day, partly due to the poor currency exchange ratio we had with Germany in the late 80's early 90's.
My car stickered for $80K in 1989 and was advertised as being one of the fastest cars in the world. Had I laid $110K, or more, ($80K CPI inflation adjusted to 1999 dollars, no 2000 available yet) to be "eaten for lunch" by a $30K Corvette that had children usable rear seats your darn right I wouldn't be too happy.
AS I have previously stated, if you search the archives you will see all kinds of talk about the M3 being faster than the Z06. I have always defended the M3 on _several_ other factors, but comparing the 2 on performance merits alone puts the M3 in 2nd place.
And, I really would feel ripped off had I bought a Z8.
