then don't use your brakes...

You mean to tell me the only car you've ever seen dirty wheels / brake dust on is a BMw 3 series? You don't get out much. Speaking for myself, just about ANY car with nice open face wheels and disk brakes will show dust after heavy braking. That's the nature of disk brakes and the pad compound used. And it's the nature many people to not bother to clean their cars very often.

Some pads are known to be worse than others. Every once in a while a performance mag will do a review of pads. For the most part, they usually discover it's hard to do better than factory pads in terms of braking distance or noise. Sometimes they find some with less fade, dust, or noise.

If you ask nicely in the E46 and e36 forums and on alt.autos.bmw in usenet, you'll get some suggestions for low-dust pads. I've heard PBR Metalmaster's mentioned more than once.

To keep the wheels looking good, use a decent sealant, wax, and wash them along with the rest of the car once a week.

If you're rating cars based on their brake dust quotient... maybe you should be looking at a 1960's chevelle with drum brakes all around.
