There's not a lot to the I6 block. Even though the M5 V8 block is Al vs I6 iron, I'd still be surprised if the engine as a whole is lighter. You've got all the extra gear for two more pistons and two heads instead of one. Plus bigger exhaust, intake, clutch etc. Being shorter, potentially might move CG lower and closer to center of car but by no means would this be guaranteed either.

After all, if using an existing production motor was possible, surely it would have been cheaper than re-developing the I6 all over again and spending all the money they did on it?
