Obviously, the second is as of yet unknown. I figure 2-3 cars per month per large dealer at an aggressive rate. Since I'm approximatley #20 on my dealer's list, i'm hoping for delivery of a MY-2002 M3 in late 2001 or early 2002, which is exactly what I want.
The first piece of info obviously depends on the dealer and their existing list of deposits for the M3. Ask them how long their list is (what number you'd be), and you'll have a better idea. Speculation at this point is that you'll be better with a double-digit number at a large dealer than a single-digit number at a small dealer, with the exception of being #1 or maybe #2 (cars will be allocated from BMW based on dealer size/volume).
Most of the people on this board placed their deposits between 3-12 months ago. You're probably looking at close to a year or year-and-a-half wait at every dealer you encounter. Several dealers have closed their lists (no more deposits), as they feel they are at least two years out.
You can try calling around to a variety of dealers. If you're interested, my dealer is Baron BMW, in Kansas City. Call 913-722-5100 and ask for Greg Griswold, their M car specialist. Also mention that Eric Foster sent you from Bimmer.org, you'll get quoted MSRP and receive all possible preferential treatment (in addition to being friends with Greg and having a long-time relationship with Baron, i'm also on the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the BMWCCA, so they know me well @ Baron).
I've tried to get some threads going on here about the current state of each dealer, but very few have responded. Try checking through the last two or three weeks of archives, looking for such posts with dealer contact info.
