I agree, its quite possible to "buy" the technology, as - /M - would only have to go take a look at hartge or whatever tuner it is that dropped the v8 in a 3 sedan, which is perfectly understandable for racing situations in my opinion. i wouldnt be surprised if they havent already, or if they were present when that tuner tested it.

Aside from that, there are _so_ many things you can do to lower emissions that if they were serious about it, you could _buy_ the technology from another company to do it even if they can't figure it out themselves. BTW I don't think GM/Ford/Chrysler have any ULEV V8s so I think that is pure BS. GM bought Honda's V6 just so that they could get a higher displacement ULEV engine since they did not have one of their own.

I think grinch was talking about buying technology to make the M5's V8 meet ULEV, as opposed to technology to make it fit into a 3 series.

I'm fairly confident that BMW can figure out how to stick a big hunk of metal under the hood. The technology to make it a ULEV may be different, and there may be reasons they _need_ to buy it (i.e. patents and stupid stuff, like in the U.S.).

For example, if the issue is that they can't get the cats close enough to the engine to keep cold-start emissions down to acceptable levels, there's technology to solve that, like different cat designs, and even pre-heaters for the cats.
