Trade-in/Lease/Purchase Dilemma... (archive)

Hi all. There is a chance that I might be able to pick up a new M3 around June via a connection with a dealership. However, it is still iffy as to when and if it is even possible. My dilemma is that I need a car good in the snow and I have been considering a 330Xi or an X5. I cannot buy both the bad weather car(and more practical car) and the new M3. If the M were available, I'd grab that in a heartbeat and just rent a car on the weekends if I need to go into the snow.

My question is this... if I do decide to lease or purchase an X5 or 330Xi right now and the M3 becomes available 6-9 months down the line, how easy is it to get out of the lease or the finance plan (I wouldn't be able to pay off the car in full by the time the M might become available) to 'swap' to the M? Is it cost prohibitive getting out of a lease or trading in a car that hasn't been fully paid off? I would like to have either the X5 or 330Xi by the end of January for the winter and don't want to hold off until I'm sure what the situation is on the M.
