Maybe its just gossip, but if they do intend to release an M compact to compete with a Scoob and/or similar cars I`m sure BMW will have some tricks planned!

1. 1990 and 1991 E30 M3s had 4cyl engines too as well as the 318i ti etc. as late as 1999.
2. It would not compete with a WRX with 220hp and a 7 sec. 0-60.
I just point out these two errors because they bring the validity of the rest of the information into question.

M- Compact due 2003. (14th Nov)
BMW are to bring out a stunning 220 Bhp M Version of the 3-Series Compact.
Due in 2003 the M-Compact it will feature a highly tuned new 2.0 Litre NG Engine, that translates to 110 Bhp per litre.
The Engine marks BMW's return to the 4-cylinder unit. The last foru-pot was used in the E30 M3 in 1989.
Expect 0-60 well below 7.0 secs & Top Speed at over 140 Mph. The M-Compact is expected to cost approx. £25,000.
It will feature a full length sunroof as an option like the Mercedes C-Class coupe.
It will have to compete against Audi's A3 & Subaru Impreza's WRX.
Standard Compact to make debut at the Geneva Motor show in March 2001.
Possible that a 2.0 Litre diesel will also join the line up.
