Does anyone know how many pre-production cars BMW usually makes? What happens to these cars? I counted at least 19 different cars in the reviews based on license numbers with only one being shared. That was between BMW Car and BMW Performance. Top car also had pictures of 4 different cars, one of which was in Autoweek.

I thought someone might be able to match the license plate on the Roundel car to a known Titanium silver car to be sure of the color but it looks like that would be unlikely. I haven't seen the Roundel article but people were asking about the color below.

BMW makes lots and lots of preproduction cars. Some are used for press cars others to test production techniques and other purposes. There was a Topaz Blue Z8 at the Z3 Homecoming over Labor Day that I heard had be assembled, disassembled and reassembled many times for education purposes.

There is no way to tell how many preproduction M3s BMW has made (I am guessing it varies by model). Most of these cars will be destroyed.
