BTW, one of the reasons the 928 was developed was because Porsche needed a flagship that they knew would be able to meet potential future governement regualations (think early 70's here and the crush of new car related regulations). They were afraid the rear engined car would no longer be able to meet safety and emissions regulations and still be a high performance car.
Since they've have been able to engineer many of these conserns away, and some of the more draconian legislation never passed, the death of the 911 never came about, although there are plenty of people who will argue that todays liquid cooled 911 actually has more in common with the 928 than it does the air cooled 911's, apart from engine placement and number of cylinders.
