The 2001 Nav system is widescreen (16x9 aspect ratio), without a touchscreen, has the tape deck hidden behind the screen (i think) and still uses CDs.

I don't see any hope that this will change in the M3.

I'm just hoping that BMW clues in and provides the option of in-dash CD behind the screen, and not just tape. Yes, I want in-dash CD plus the 6 in the trunk.
