I'm in about the same boat - all the dealers in Seattle are saturated, and I got treated like crap at the Bellevue outfit. I started looking in eastern Washington and Oregon. I found a dealer in Bend, OR - it's a pretty small operation, but they still expect to get at least one car per month. I'm #14 with a $1000 deposit. I was encouraged when the e-com sales rep told me they did eight M5s last year (which I hear had significantly lower production than we should see with the M3). I'm trying to time delivery to coincide with the end of my Volvo lease next December. I will go earlier if necessary and default on the lease though - I won't resist an excuse to end what is already becoming an excruciating wait.

I got my contract pack in the mail today
and will be sending a preliminary list of options to the dealer tomorrow, along with a fax of the contract. Then it's month after month of watching MPEGs of the thing tearing around a track. :)

PS: if anyone from Microsoft is watching and planning to take delivery of one this spring, please mail me (I saw a message that was posted from MS on this forum, so I know there are some lurking around). I'd like to take a look and maybe have the honor of a quick ride.

PPS: is the shark fin for AM/FM radio as well? That is, do you have to order the cell phone deal to get the fin?

After sending an e-mail to the General Manager of a Mid-South (U.S.) Dealer on Monday (I live in Dallas where the lists at all three major dealers are either too long or they've stopped taking deposits), he finally telephoned me today. He was extremely apologetic for not replying earlier, but said they were having problems retrieving their e-mail.

However, I had already spoken to their Internet Sales Manager, added my name, and paid my $ 1,000 security deposit yesterday as I felt very comfortable dealing with this fairly large dealer. My contract states a buy price at MRSP, that I will get a 2002 M3, and that my security deposit is refundable (it is handwritten and signed by the Internet Sales Manager). I am Number 23 on their list. Not too bad a position for just now coming onboard ! I know some posters have had their names on a list somewhere for two years or more !

My e-mail to the GM had indicated that I wanted a 2002 model year M3 and if my name came up before the 2002's were released, would they allow me to defer to the next buyer(s). Yes indeed he said, no problem, they would work with me. He also stated that at my Number 23 position, I may very well get the very first 2002 they receive.

He noted that they should receive their first demo car in December. Then, he expected one car in January, and maybe one or two in February. From March forward, he anticipated receiving two to four cars per month. So, at Number 23, I can expect to get my car in maybe October (thus the 2002 model year).

And oh, the General Manager did not know that the reason (so we've all read and heard) for the production delay was a software programming problem with the equipment that makes the new engine. This is indicated on page seven in the Newsline section of the November issue of BMWCAR Magazine.

Hope this information is helpful to everyone !

This is my first posting to the Board although I've been scanning here for about one month. Thanks to all the knowledgeable posters for the great information !

Brian
