You're right, what matters is what's _relative_. Relative to E36, e46 is bigger, stiffer, stronger, and can handle more power. For it's size, strength, and safety, it's not heavy at all.

Sure, if it were an e36, with no more space, power, strength or safety, it would be heavy. But it's not an E36, and it's better than e36 on all of those counts. Relative to if you tried to add those things to E36 chassis design, it's actually light.
