I don't have any specific information about the new M3, but here's a nice article about variable valve timing in general with some details about the BMW double-Vanos. I suppose the M3 is using the same (or at least very similar) d-Vanos as the rest of the E46 family.

Can anyone indicate a site that discusses in detail the double-VANOS system, and how it works? Gory, beautiful detail is welcome... :^)

I suspect that this may not exist for the E46 M3, but perhaps for the M5?
