Ok, I take it back. Engine rpm could be the problem, but not a direct engine problem. I'll take another page from the S2K story. This is a scenario I can see for BMW:

The initial run of S2000's (MY2000) had a nasty little glitch in the transmission. It appears that the parts supplier for gear and synchro bits was producing out of spec parts. The catch was, no one part was far enough out of spec to be rejected. But the combination of parts yielded a "stacking tolerance" fault. Result, when the transmission was nice and hot and you reved to 9K in 1st and shifted quick into second, sometimes: grrip. Like shifting w/out using the clutch at 9K, bad. Eat the syncro's alive. So Honda hemmed and hawed and gave blank stares at the first 100 or so customers. Then they acknowledged the problem and put out a service bulletin. That bulletin entailed a week long surgery to replace transmission parts. Scary considering the local Honda mechanics might have changed the oil in a S2000 once or twice.

I would much prefer BMW nip a problem like that in the bud rather that putting me through a similar experience.
