The E34 M5 might not have had the same regard as the E39 M5 has now, but it was pretty close...best 4 door sedan on the plant. Granted the economy is better now than it was then, but only the really high end car exhibited the nutty prices we see now. I think BMW is making at now (at least with the M5, probably not with the M3) trying to use the old Ferrari addage of making one car less than demand.
