I really rather amused at those who feel that a future with quite a few M3's on the road is a sad place. It's going to be a wonderful vehicle, and if many people can enjoy it, all the better.

As the consumate driver's car from the good people at BMW, the M3 is _not_ about the shallow snobbery of "I've got one and all of you don't". It's primary mission is not about appearances. It's about the enjoyment of DRIVING a car which has been engineered to perform like few others.

So if you feel that E46 M3's will become as common as Buicks then that is wonderful news, since such a large supply will surely put some of them into the hands of those who would otherwise never know such joyous driving pleasure if BMW listened to the snobs and minted only a few hundred for the rich, famous, and well connected.
