BMW may not have sold an F1 car but they have sold plenty of F1 and other racing engines. If they made any money at this is debatable, but they _do_ sell components to race teams. It isn't carte blanche at the BMW parts bin as you would seem to imply. The other team sponsors also redirect a pretty penny towards the technical and mechanical suppliers to ensure their parts source is reliable and timely.

The fact is in today's economics, companies don't spend a red cent unless they can justify a return on it, and marking it down as "marketing" expense with no other means to ensure break even simply doesn't cut the mustard.

Who else besides the works team runs the BMW engine? Zero. F1 is marketing marketing marketing...PERIOD.
