BMW may not have sold an F1 car but they have sold plenty of F1 and other racing engines. If they made any money at this is debatable, but they _do_ sell components to race teams. It isn't carte blanche at the BMW parts bin as you would seem to imply. The other team sponsors also redirect a pretty penny towards the technical and mechanical suppliers to ensure their parts source is reliable and timely.

The fact is in today's economics, companies don't spend a red cent unless they can justify a return on it, and marking it down as "marketing" expense with no other means to ensure break even simply doesn't cut the mustard.
