VANOS actuator question (archive)

I was interested to know if anyone has technical data on the VANOS actuator for the BMW cams

specifically,
Is the actuator hydraulic operated? If so, using engine oil?
Are the solinoids for control internal or external?
what are the VANOS position sensors?
is the feedback look to control cam position internal to the ECU or is an another electronics module?
What does the actuator look like?
Does anyone have dimensioned drawings?
part numbers?
How is the actuator attached to the camshaft and the cam pulley? or is it mounted separately and the cam and pulley have the special splines on themselves

I'm asking becuase I want to use the BMW Vanos acuators on a non-BMW race motor I'm building and they seem to be the best variable valve timing system out there (largest range, stepless variablitiy). So I want to buy two vanos actuators, fabricate the necessary interface hardware between the two non-bmw cams and pulley hardware, and install and test.

I've found the fabrication and electronics expertise necessary to do the job, I just need the info on the actuator system itself
any ideas?
