....the Registry of Motor Vehicles WILL charge you sales tax. If you don't believe it, fine, but thats just the way it is. It doesn't matter if you bought it from a dealer, private party, or whoever. When you bring the car to get it registered you will have to pay sales tax on the price you paid. And no....you can't say that you paid $1, or anything like that. They go by the current book value. The only way you wouldn't have to pay any sales tax on a car that you bought, is if your state doesn't have a sales tax (i.e. you live in New Hampshire).

I can't find it anywhere. I've heard there's a "use tax" that gets charged somewhere, but I don't see it in the process. Here, read the FAQ and see if you can find it. There's the VLT, which is just AZ's sliding we-rake-you-over-the-coals registration cost. Not trying to avoid that. Search the FAQ for sales tax. Or search the whole damn statute for sales tax. Never shows up.

There are enough people saying this that I believe it's somewhere. I just want to find out how it works. It can't be a sales tax on registration because there's no "sale" there. Maybe a use tax, but if it's not at registration, then where is it?
