That's not really a fair statement. The 5s are larger than the 3s and anyone who spends considerable time with >2 adults in the car would probably like the M5 better.
Let's face it. A lot of M3 owners will never track their cars and will rarely push them on a twisty mountain road. Most (not all, obviously) want an M3 because it feels nice, it is nice, and it will blow away the young punk in his Mustang GT when he tries to cut you off on the way to the freeway on-ramp. An M5 will do this as well but with more room and probably a smoother ride.
Give me an E39 M5T and an E46 M3LTW! Oh, yeah!

After spending significant time developing the M3 chassis and engine, BMW will use it in as many variants of the car as possible. Wagon and Sedan versions of the car will be produced, however, the company will wait until the new, more powerful, M5 hits the market so as to avoid overlap. Comparing a potential M3 Sedan with the current M5 sedan leaves the latter in the dust, and when price is put into the equation buying an M5 over an M3 Sedan borders stupidity.
