I just placed my order after being notified that the guy before me can't be found (he was #1 I was #2), which is just great, as long as he surfaces someday..lol. The only problem is that I have been wondering, like you, if I should pass my #2 slot and wait even longer for the car.... (I'm concerned with the SMGII availability more than anything else).
Well, I decided to use my #1 spot and order the car anyway, here's what I'm thinking.

1) I can always upgrade in a couple years to the newest M3 (003) which will, by that time, have seen all the power increases, SMGII, GT editions, v8s and colors BMW will ever intend for the e46 M3.
2) I have no doubt I'll be able to sell the 01 for close to what I paid in 1.5-2 years in this kind of market, no problem.
3) SMGII, sure I'd eventually like to have it but I'm not sure it's worth waiting for when there's still no confirmation anywhere of it's availability for 02. Also I don't like the idea of having to gear down from 4th to 3rd to 2nd (sequentially) every time I slow down instead of just going from 4th to 2nd in the manual like I'm used to (trivial I know but I've been thinking about it). Also I think SMG will increase 0-60 by .3 seconds at the MOST and I don't plan on dragging people in my car. Lastly, the wide range of torque will keep me happy in 3rd most of the time when gunning it around the bends, I hope. SMGII might be better for the GT and/or serious track users.
4) I will have a rare car for at least one year of my life!!

Like the others have said the car will get some incremental upgrades through the years but to wait for them (another 6+ months) when you have a #1 or 2 spot (and a great resale opportunity down the line), doesn't seem worth it when the well reviewed 6 speed 333hp version is right there in front of you!!!

That's my opinion at least... I'm interested in what others with top spots (or not) are thinking about this most unfortunate dilemma..lol
