In any case, an all Al V8 will be shorter, and about the same weight as the new Al/Fe E46 M3 motor. V8 will be shorter, and will likely move CG more to center of car. Indisputably, an ///M V8, when compared to the new ///M I6, would provide:
1. more power
2. better balance
3. comparable weight
Still, the I6-BMW heritage link would be (has been?) ruptured, and the future would point in an unfamiliar direction. This is terribly uncomfortable to the BMW history-minded among us.
I'm torn; the V8 would rock, but it would have to kick the sh*t out the of ///M5 in terms of performance, or I wouldn't even consider it. I love I6's, especially the new ///M motor. So sad...
