17" 3 series sport wheels fit. I can't for the life of me understand why people keep saying this is bullshit, because a) the M3 uses same size brakes as M5 and b) the M5 fits 17" wheels as well.

Sidewall punctures are NOT the norm for any tire. Either the tires are being run along side curbs and jagged holes (not over, but along the side) or you've been the victim of some vandalism.
17" will be cheaper but you also might want to look for a tire with a protection ridge along the side, and boost your pressures.
