18 inch wheel plus 225/45 tires:
sidewall height: 225mm * 0.45 == 101.25mm == 3.986 inches
total diam: 18 inches + 2 sidewalls == 18 + 7.97 == 25.97 inches
So the stock front wheel and tire setup has a total diameter of just a hair under 26 inches, or a rolling radius of right at 13 inches.
Now I take the statement "17 inch wheels have same sidewall height" and do the math:
sidewall height: 3.986 inches (you said SAME height)
total diam: 17 inches + 2 sidewalls == 17 + 7.97 == 24.97 inches
Thus if the two wheels have tires with the SAME sidewall height, the 17's get a rolling radius which is 4% smaller (that one inch of diameter) than the stock setup.
Now you may have meant to say that the 17 inch wheel package has the same ASPECT RATIO, in that it still uses 45 series rubber. This in no way would give the same sidewall height.
If the sidewalls on the 17 inch tires are the same height as the 18's, the rolling radius is significantly reduced. I don't know if that's how it is or not, I just found it surprising.
