Bore dimension is at it's limit.

Aftermarket tuners are stroking variants of this block and using very thick head gaskets or spacers to keep the compression ratio from going sky high. The longer stroke may also have impact on engine longevity if you rev it up near the 8000 rpm limit since the pistons, rods, and other important bits are travelling that much further each time they go around.

So yes, even BMW could go with a long stroke version of this engine. But they may have some good reasons to not want to try it.
