If the numbers from MK Boy are accurate, it sounds like the South African price may be the closest analog to the US price. They are paying a price for the basic car that's close to what we'll be paying. The SMG II option there was something like $3250.
I think BMW will shoot themselves in the foot if they charge much over the $3000 range for SMG II in the US. It will be expensive enough that they'll never push much volume in this market, and that will make it more expensive to support in the long run.
I get the feeling that with the exception of a handful of impatient people who have money to burn (mostly on the West Coast), most people feel that the current MSRP on the car is getting close to the high end of a reasonable value. SMG II at $5000 or $6000 will represent more than 10% of the cost of the car, and that's a *ton* for one feature, no matter how cool it is.
Of course, I could be wrong :-)
