Autocar generally produces the best performance figures in the UK. It's own road test figures say:

E36 M3: 0-60 5.3s, 0-100 12.2s, 30-70 4.4s
E46 M3: 0-60 4.8s, 0-100 11.5s, 30-70 4.1s

The perception of acceleration is very subjective and is probably enhanced by the drive-by-wire throttle (especially in sport mode).
