It is all about engine characteristics. That's why I have the impression
the difference is bigger than the figures are telling us.

The new engine is smoother and does not at all lack the low end punch of
the E36 M3 engine ! In fact I had the feeling (don't know if this is a
fact) it develops more low end power. At least it feels like that ! The
high end is unquestionable more impressive.

As a package the E46 M3 engine is a real improvement over the E36 M3
engine. I used to be a hard-core E36 M3 engine Fan and was not at all
convinced that the new engine is much better. However after driving the
car I changed my mind and I have to say that I like the new engine even
better. It is better because it has the stregths of the previous engine,
BMW even improved those stregths and added some new thrilling skills. At
this point I don't see a downside... perhaps reliability ??? Who knows.

I believe this engine is a master piece !

regards
Andreas
