Chrome is shiny decoration. It goes with a luxo-cruiser or maybe a hot rod. For example, I thought the chrome wheels on the err...uh...Ford 49 show car looked very fitting.

Chrome wheels don't go with a sports car, a race car, or a "rugged" SUV.

Polished is probably the best for a sports car. It's no frills, no extra weight, better heat dissipation for the brakes (?). Unfortunately, it's labor intensive. For cost savings, powdercoated or painted is the way to go.

I do agree with your generalization though. It makes perfect sense: Shiny wheels...shiny gold chains, shiny watch, shiny teeth, shiny hair, oily(shiny)-haired chest exposed by unbuttoned shiny shirt...see it all makes sense.

The shinier the rims, the greasier the cheez stepping out of the car. Nothing against rice burners with chrome rims, just does not seem to go with a fifty thousand dollar car.
