Comparing the current S4, which was designed to compete against the E36 M3, against the E46 M3 isn't fair. Wait until the next-generation S4 comes out, and we'll see...

Otoh, several folks on Audiworld have run 13.4's lately with no mods other than chips, and they're not too worried about the E46. Picking up 7/10ths in the 1/4 for $700 or so is pretty sweet. ;-)
