I won't tolerate any American car until one proves reliability. Every one of them feels like junk after a few miles, and breaks too often. I have never been pleased driving Mustang or 'vette.
I need a back seat for occas., and a reasonable trunk.
I am not interested in impressing others with dazzling looks or an impressive badge.
BUILD QUALITY? I could care less if nothing breaks. I didn't see any problems with M3. I will NOT enter a concours. Leave those details for those of you who spend your lives obsessing over inconsequential (IMO) details.
Having a car for weekend driving makes no sense for me. Why do so when I can drive a great car daily? When I have an extra it doesn't get used.
I use up cars @ 20-30k/yr. While I write them off, only so much can be written off and my alternatives are well past the max.
My alternatives were thus CLK55, M3, Z06, Mustang, CL-S, and 911.
911 is much more expensive with much less practicality. Looks are great but I don't need to impress.
Z06 is still a 'vette, not practical, and not reliable.
Mustang -- yetch.
CL-S is wonderful but FWD is a turn off, limiting handling, and not as fast as others. I could live with it and enjoy it, but don't have to.
Down to 2 serious contenders, M3 and CLK55. Both fast, agile, relatively reliable (for high perf. cars), comfortable, and within a reasonable price range for my purposes.
The differences? M3 is faster. M3 is cheaper by 15k, important if I'll use it up in a few years.
Thus for a high performance coupe to use as a daily driver, I see no other alternative FOR ME.
AND I love the car!
