I had a chance to buy a 635 and batted it about for almost a year. I love the lines on the 635, but the 3.0 won out. Why? I really don't know other than the smell of the interior. Plus the car is the last coachbuilt by BMW.

I worry about all the things you worry about too. I think the things you worry about apply to any car pushing 30. The biggest problem concerning the mechanics of any car is how the previous owner(s) maintained the car and treated it on the road. Iguess sometimes it's hard to tell until it breaks. The biggest problem I've seen with the E9's is RUST. These cars rust if you look at them the wrong way. Be advised of that up front.
