I see where you're coming from, but the point of my posting was that, for example, your friend with the GTO convertible would have no trouble selling his car (which probably cost $4,000 or under new) for $15-$20,000 to an enthusiast or nonenthusiast; everyone knows what a GTO is, and everyone loves convertibles. Same goes for British sports cars; people ask whether I'm interested in selling my TR-6 almost every time I drive it (I'm not-at any price). To sell even a mint restored coupe for the $20,000 the resto cost, you would have to find a very serious BMW enthusiast, indeed. When I drove my old 3.0CS (very clean, fjord blue) most people didn't even notice it, and I live in Boston, which is a pretty car-savvy city. Like I said before, I love the E9, but there are lots of other cars that will sell easily for a higher percentage of their resto costs. BTW, E24 coupes and Porsche 928s are selling unbelievably cheaply, at least around here.
