D Jetronic was one of the early electronic fuel injection set ups. BMW and MB used a set of auxiliary points in the distributor to trigger the injection pulses rather than crankshaft or flywheel sensors. VW used the distributor coil pulses to time the injection rather than aux points.
It was not really a bad system, and was simpler than L Jetronic or Motronic (later systems), but required more maintenance due to the mechanical trigger contacts.
I would not avoid a D Jetronic car, though it may require periodic maintenance.
