My best friend has spent years restoring a rusted out GTO ragtop. It is stunning to look at now. But even he admits he'd never be able to recoup all costs out of it if even you include his labor time at 10 bucks an hour.

you BUY the car, not when you SELL the car. It is never wise to start with a "rusted out" chassis like your friend's GTO. Sometimes "cheap is dear" as my mom used to say.
Finding a rust-free car costs a bit more in the beginning, but pays for itself over and over as the restoration proceeds.
